Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event happened on the third rotation when marshals were observed on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys running across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority

"On lap three, marshals were notified and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that area"
