One teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's parents found his remains in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The investigation learned how his parent got a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."

In a testimony read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An investigation report from police later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said items was never stolen in the first place".

News coverage about the supposed stolen remains generated online responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".

The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.

Emotional Wellbeing Effect

She added that Kai had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".

Kai was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his passing.

Isolation and Anxiety

His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".

When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.

Online Bullying

In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the allegations.

The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".

She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".

He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Reaction

The inquest heard from educational staff at the local High School.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.

After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's family landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.

The court heard his parents said they never got that message.

Formal Conclusion

Lead investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.

"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was released whilst investigations proceeded."

The coroner determined: "Exists no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
